Chandigarh to Invest ₹300 Crore in Sports: Indoor Hall, Olympic Pool, Girls’ Hostel and CCTV Security Network Planned
Chandigarh | Sports Development News
Chandigarh Administration is set to revolutionize its sports infrastructure by investing ₹300 crore over the next two years to boost sports activities, training, and international-level competition readiness. The major revamp will include the construction of a large indoor sports hall, an all-weather Olympic-size swimming pool, and a residential hostel for female athletes. The government also plans to enhance security by installing CCTV cameras across all major stadiums and complexes.
A centralized Control Room in Sector 42 will oversee surveillance and monitoring of all sports venues to ensure athlete safety and efficient management.
🏟️ Sector-42 to Become Sports Hub: ₹210 Crore Mega Project
Out of the total ₹300 crore budget, a major share of ₹210 crore has been allocated for the development of a state-of-the-art indoor sports complex, swimming pool, and hostel in Sector-42.
Key features include:
-
Indoor Sports Hall accommodating 12 disciplines: Badminton, Boxing, Wrestling, Table Tennis, Basketball, Kabaddi, Netball, Gymnastics and more
-
Seating capacity for 4,000 spectators
-
On-site coaching facilities, fitness zones, and medical support units
The aim is to create a high-performance sports center where athletes can train year-round under professional supervision.
🏊 Olympic-Size Swimming Complex
The swimming complex will meet international standards with:
-
Olympic-size competition pool
-
Dedicated diving pool
-
Training/practice pool
This is aimed at supporting swimming and diving athletes for national and international level preparation, even during monsoons and winters due to the all-weather design.
🏨 Girls’ Hostel with Modern Amenities
To ensure proper accommodation and convenience for women athletes, a new hostel facility for 300 girls will also be constructed within the Sector-42 campus. Facilities will include:
-
Kitchen and dining hall
-
Study and recreational rooms
-
Hygienic restrooms and laundry units
This step aligns with the broader initiative of promoting gender inclusion in sports and encouraging rural and urban girls to participate professionally.
🔧 Upgradation of Existing Sports Facilities
Other key stadiums in the city will also be upgraded as part of this mission:
-
Sector-16 Cricket Stadium: New turf pitches, improved ground levelling, and installation of modern floodlights.
-
Sukhna Lake Tennis Courts: Existing mud courts to be replaced by synthetic surfaces, providing year-round playability.
Officials noted that these upgrades will not only benefit local players but also make Chandigarh suitable to host national and international tournaments in the near future.
🎯 CCTV Surveillance and Safety Infrastructure
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, all major stadiums across the city will be connected to a centralized surveillance system. CCTV cameras will be installed at entry/exit points, practice zones, locker areas, and spectator stands.
The Sector-42 Control Room will manage live feeds from all locations, allowing rapid response in case of emergencies, trespassing, or mismanagement.
