Man Shoots Mother-in-Law in Jalandhar Hospital; Wife Escapes, Hunt on for Accused

Date:

Jalandhar, Punjab:
In a horrifying incident that unfolded inside a government hospital, a man opened fire at his mother-in-law, shooting her in the head while she was visiting her injured daughter in the Civil Hospital of Kartarpur, Jalandhar district. The woman was critically wounded and referred to Jalandhar Civil Hospital after initial treatment.

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, the assailant also attempted to shoot his wife, but missed the target. The bullets struck the wall, narrowly averting a double tragedy.

🏥 The Shocking Incident

The victim, Kulwinder Kaur, had come to visit her daughter Jyoti, who was admitted at Kartarpur Civil Hospital following a domestic violence incident allegedly involving her husband, Sukhchain Singh.

On Monday evening, Sukhchain arrived at the hospital with a pistol. Without warning, he fired a bullet that struck Kulwinder Kaur in the head. The bullet reportedly pierced through her skull, leaving her in a critical state. Doctors rushed to provide first aid and later shifted her to a better-equipped facility in Jalandhar for specialized treatment.

The hospital turned into a scene of panic and chaos. Patients, staff, and visitors fled in all directions. Blood stained the general ward where the shooting occurred, sending shockwaves across the city.

🚨 Attempt to Kill Wife Also Foiled

Sukhchain then turned his weapon toward his wife Jyoti, firing two bullets in quick succession. However, both bullets missed, hitting the wall behind her. According to hospital staff and patients, Jyoti had earlier sustained injuries due to assault by her husband and had been admitted for recovery.

Eyewitnesses say Kulwinder Kaur attempted to shield herself but couldn’t escape in time. Her condition remains critical.

🕵️‍♂️ Police Response & Accused on the Run

Senior officers including DSP Vijay Kanwar Pal and SHO Ramandeep Singh immediately reached the hospital. By then, the accused had managed to flee the scene. The police launched a manhunt and assured the public that he would be arrested soon.

DSP Vijay Pal stated:

“The accused fired at his mother-in-law and tried to shoot his wife. He has fled but we are conducting raids to nab him. We are also investigating whether the weapon used was licensed or illegal.”

🧾 Background: History of Domestic Violence

As per preliminary reports, Jyoti is a resident of Brahmpur village, and her husband Sukhchain hails from Aujla village in Kapurthala district. Jyoti had been a victim of domestic abuse, and due to repeated assault by her husband, she had been hospitalized for treatment.

The attack appears to be premeditated, as Sukhchain entered the hospital with a loaded weapon and targeted both women.

👮 Legal Action & Investigation Underway

Police officials are treating this as a case of attempted murder, and sections under the Arms Act are likely to be invoked. A forensic team has been dispatched to examine the crime scene and recover ballistic evidence.

Authorities are also checking CCTV footage to trace the escape route of the accused and determine if he had any accomplices.

💬 Public Reaction: Fear and Outrage

The shocking act of violence inside a medical institution has sparked widespread panic and condemnation in Kartarpur and nearby areas. Residents are questioning the security arrangements at public hospitals, asking how a man managed to enter with a firearm and commit such a brutal act.
