ESIC Introduces One-Time Digital Registration Opportunity for Unregistered Employees and Employers
The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has launched a new digital portal to streamline and promote the registration of employees working in non-governmental institutions. This one-time registration drive will run from December 1 to December 31, offering a crucial opportunity for unregistered employees and employers to come under the social security umbrella without facing penalties or inspections for prior non-compliance.
The announcement was made by Sunil Kumar Yadav, Joint Director of ESIC, Sub-Regional Office, Jalandhar, who stated that this initiative is aimed at including contract and temporary workers who were earlier left out of the ESI coverage due to employer negligence or lack of awareness.
Key Features of the New ESIC Portal
According to Mr. Yadav, the newly launched digital portal will enable employers to register their business entities and employees using three main platforms:
-
ESIC Main Portal
-
EMI (Employer Management Interface) Facility
-
MCA (Ministry of Corporate Affairs) Portal
Employers can digitally submit the necessary information to register their workers, and the registration will be considered valid from the date declared by the employer. The process is entirely online, designed to be user-friendly, and reduces bureaucratic hurdles.
Benefits of the One-Time Registration Scheme
This special drive is particularly focused on unregistered employers and their workforce, offering them a clean slate. Key benefits include:
-
No Demand for Previous Arrears: Employers will not be penalized for earlier dues.
-
No Inspection Hassles: There will be no inspections or audits for backdated compliance.
-
Covers Temporary & Contractual Workers: Even those working on a temporary basis can now be brought under ESI coverage.
-
Simplified Documentation: A digital-first approach makes the entire process more efficient and transparent.
This move is seen as part of the government’s broader agenda to expand social security benefits to informal sector workers and ensure inclusivity in labour welfare.
Push Toward Inclusive Social Security
Mr. Yadav highlighted that many private institutions, especially small-scale businesses and contractors, have so far avoided or delayed ESI registration. As a result, numerous eligible employees, particularly in sectors like construction, security services, hospitality, and retail, have been left without access to healthcare and insurance benefits.
This special registration window is aimed at correcting that gap. It will allow the inclusion of thousands of previously excluded workers into the ESI framework, ensuring they get access to medical care, maternity benefits, disability cover, and family pensions in case of untimely death or injury.
Time-Bound Claim Settlements and Transparency
Along with expanding its coverage, ESIC has also improved the internal mechanism for claim settlements. According to Mr. Yadav, claim processing has been accelerated, and most cases are now settled within a predefined timeline to avoid delays.
In recent months, ESIC has digitalized its claim procedures and enhanced communication between insured persons and the corporation. The aim is to ensure that rightful claims do not get stuck in paperwork and are disbursed promptly.
