Like Pong and Ranjit Sagar Dam, Bhakra Dam has also prepared to wreak havoc in Malwa region of Punjab. The water level of the reservoir in the dam was 1674.01 feet on Monday, which is just less than 6 feet from the danger mark. The rising water level can pose a danger to the dam, that is why B.B.M.B. on Monday opened the flood gates of Bhakra Dam by 4 feet and started releasing 56,000 cusecs of water into Sutlej.
On normal days, the water coming from Bhakra to Sutlej is kept at 36,000 cusecs. Compared to normal days, at this time Sutlej has to bear about 20,000 cusecs of additional water from the dam. Due to the excess water being released into the Sutlej, hundreds of villages in Ropar, Nawanshahr, Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur, Mansa, Fatehgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib, Ludhiana districts are at risk of floods.
High alert has been sounded around all the tributaries of the Sutlej, Ghaggar Tangri, Markanda and Bhakra originating from the Sutlej, after which people have started taking care of their valuables.
