Chandigarh bank unions protest for 5-day work week implementation
The protest was part of demonstrations held nationwide.
Seeking the immediate implementation of a five-day working week for bankers, as agreed in the last wage settlement, the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) on Wednesday held a protest at Bank Square in Sector 17, Chandigarh.
Comprising unions from various public sector banks, the protest was part of demonstrations held nationwide.
The agitation focused on a long-pending demand — the immediate implementation of the five-day work week for bankers, as agreed in the wage settlement and joint note signed in March 2024.
Union leaders pointed out that nearly two years have passed since the agreement, yet the demand remains unimplemented. They expressed strong dissatisfaction over the delay and warned that continued inaction could escalate the agitation.
The unions announced that another protest would be held on December 30, following which they may be compelled to resort to strike action if their demand is not met.
