A report of massive unrest regarding liquor has emerged from the city. According to available information, a dispute over a liquor shop in the New Dashmesh Nagar area escalated to such an extent that it turned violent. It is reported that the situation flared up when a customer at the shop protested against the high price of liquor. The customer objected to being charged an extra ₹10 for a bottle of liquor, which subsequently triggered a heated argument.
It is alleged that during the altercation, individuals associated with the liquor shop physically assaulted the customer. Furthermore, shortly thereafter, employees from the Excise Department arrived at the scene and were also accused of attacking people with sticks. The customer’s Activa scooter was also damaged during this clash.
Two individuals sustained serious injuries in the incident and have been identified as Sunny Dhawan and Kamal. Both have been admitted to a hospital for treatment. The victims allege that four individuals collectively attacked them using sticks. Following the incident, residents of the area staged a massive protest. Local residents claim that two separate liquor shops are currently operating in the vicinity under a single license; this leads to crowds of intoxicated individuals gathering in the area right from the morning, frequently resulting in chaotic situations.
Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the scene and recorded statements from both parties. The police have stated that further action will be taken following the medical examination (MLR) of the injured. As the dispute escalated, the liquor shop was temporarily shut down. However, when the contractor attempted to leave the premises, residents surrounded him and demanded that the shop be permanently closed. After a prolonged period of unrest, the situation was finally brought under control through the intervention of both the police and local residents.
