Project in Ludhiana Languishes Unfinished for 2.5–3 Years; Questions Raised

Date:

The Municipal Corporation’s functioning regarding development works in the city has once again come under scrutiny. Social activists have raised their voices to highlight this issue. It is worth noting that—due to the Municipal Corporation’s extravagance, negligence, oversight, and lack of proper planning—a volleyball court intended for the general public and children remains unfinished. This court, constructed approximately two and a half to three years ago beneath the ROB (Road Over Bridge) flyover where Pakhowal Road crosses the Sidhwan Canal, continues to lie incomplete, standing as a mocking testament to the inefficiency of the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana.

Furthermore, social activists point out that a major concern is the fact that migrants and other individuals have been squatting in the area for a considerable period. When the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, originally selected this site for the volleyball court, they either overlooked—or perhaps deliberately chose to ignore—the fact that the vacant land directly facing the court likely belongs to the Improvement Trust. Consequently, that adjacent area is in a deplorable state of filth and constantly reeks of foul odors. Even if the Municipal Corporation were to finally complete this volleyball court (after three years of neglect), it is highly unlikely that anyone would choose to play there, given the persistent filth and stench right across from it.

Activists have asserted that the hard-earned money of the public has been blatantly squandered. At a time when the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, is struggling to even pay salaries to its own employees, they question the rationale behind such wasteful expenditure—or whether the contractor deliberately left the work unfinished. Demands have now been made to the Municipal Commissioner to conduct a thorough investigation into this matter.
