Attempt to Abduct 5-Year-Old Girl from Car; Woman Severely Beaten

Date:

On Sunday afternoon, in Narendra Nagar—located near Samrala Chowk—the father of a 5-year-old girl apprehended a woman who was attempting to abduct the child from his car. Hearing the commotion, other residents rushed to the scene, and a group of women proceeded to severely beat the woman who had attempted the abduction. Upon receiving a complaint, police personnel from the Dharampura outpost (falling under Police Division No. 3) arrived at the spot, took the woman into custody, and initiated legal proceedings. Inspector Balwinder Kaur stated that an investigation into the matter is currently underway, and further action will be taken only after the inquiry is concluded.

Manmeet Singh, a resident of Narendra Nagar, recounted that he was just setting out with his wife and their 5-year-old twin daughters—Gumkirat and Gunkirat—to pay their respects at the local Gurdwara Sahib. As he was backing his car out of the driveway, he noticed an unidentified woman attempting to pull one of the children out through the car’s open window.

Realizing what was happening, he immediately brought the car to a halt, stepped out, and raised an alarm, drawing a crowd of neighbors to the scene. Upon learning of the attempted abduction, the women present at the spot seized the perpetrator, gave her a severe beating, and alerted the police. Witnesses reported that when the woman realized she was trapped, she began feigning insanity and started speaking incoherently to the crowd.

During this commotion, the woman attempted to defend herself by claiming she had not tried to abduct the child, but rather that the child had approached her voluntarily. However, the child’s father countered this claim, arguing that since the car doors were locked—though the window had inadvertently been left open—it would have been impossible for the child to approach her on her own; he maintained that the woman had indeed attempted to abduct the child. ASI Ram Murti, who arrived at the scene, confirmed that he had reached the location upon receiving the information and had taken the woman into custody. He reiterated that an investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further action will be taken following the conclusion of the inquiry.
