Rajya Sabha MP and former cricketer Harbhajan Singh—who joined the BJP after leaving the Aam Aadmi Party—has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking the restoration of his security cover. Taking a strict stance on the matter and deeming it a serious issue, the Court has issued notices to both the Punjab and Central governments, seeking their responses. In his petition, Harbhajan Singh alleged that his security cover was reduced without any valid justification, thereby potentially posing a threat to his safety and that of his family. During the hearing, the High Court observed that it is imperative to conduct a proper assessment of potential threats before reducing the security cover provided to any public representative.
**Next Hearing Scheduled for May 12**
The Court directed the Punjab government to ensure the security of Harbhajan Singh and his family until the next hearing. Furthermore, the government was asked to explain the grounds upon which the security review was conducted and to detail what action has been taken thus far regarding the incident where the word ‘Traitor’ was written outside his residence. The next hearing for the case has been scheduled for May 12, at which time the government will be required to submit a report outlining the reasons for the security reduction and the associated threat assessment.
It is noteworthy that, recently, approximately 9–10 police personnel deployed outside Harbhajan Singh’s residence were withdrawn, and the official pilot vehicle provided to him was also recalled. Additionally, an incident came to light wherein unidentified individuals painted the words ‘Traitor of Punjab’ on the wall of his house—an event captured in a video that subsequently went viral on social media.
