A climate of panic gripped the entire locality after reports of a daylight shooting and extortion demands outside the home of renowned comedian Kapil Sharma went viral on social media. Locals claimed that unidentified assailants on motorcycles fired shots at the main gate of the house, triggering immense panic within the family. Rumors also circulated that the family had allegedly received an extortion demand just days prior to the incident, which supposedly precipitated this attack. Residents of the area reported that upon hearing the sound of gunfire, people retreated into their homes, and a pall of fear descended over the entire neighborhood.
A police team arrived at the scene, and CCTV footage from the surrounding area was being scrutinized. However, the Amritsar Police have categorically denied all these reports, labeling them as baseless rumors. Senior officials, including DCP Ravinderpal Singh Sandhu, stated that following a thorough on-the-spot investigation, no evidence of any firing or gunshots was found. The Police Commissionerate has issued an official statement on social media, appealing to the public not to believe in rumors and to rely solely on official sources for information.
According to the police, “Certain anti-social elements are deliberately spreading rumors. We have conducted a comprehensive investigation, and no such incident has occurred.” Incidents of this nature, linked to Kapil Sharma’s name, have surfaced in the past as well. Recently, a shooting incident occurred at his café in Canada, which was subsequently linked to gang-related rivalries. In Amritsar, too, rumors have previously been circulated—misrepresenting incidents such as a tire burst as instances of gunfire.
