A case of suicide has come to light in Dalo Majra village, Fatehgarh Sahib district, Punjab, where a man allegedly took his own life after being harassed by his in-laws. The deceased has been identified as Joginder Chauhan, a resident of the village. Following the incident, the police have registered a case against the deceased’s mother-in-law, Soma, and brother-in-law, Gurpreet Singh, based on a suicide note and statements from the family.
Man Singh, Assistant Station House Officer (SHO) of Sirhind Police Station, stated that Joginder Chauhan jumped into the canal near Adampur village on the Sirhind-Patiala road on June 6. Following the incident, police and a team of divers conducted an extensive search. Four days later, on June 10, his body was recovered from the canal near the Jai Nagar area of Patiala district. **Suicide note reveals the truth**
During the police investigation, a suicide note written by the deceased was discovered. In his statement to the police, the deceased’s father, Suresh Chauhan, said that his son held his mother-in-law and brother-in-law responsible for his death. The suicide note alleges that both had been mentally and physically harassing him for a long time. According to the family, Joginder had taken a loan of ₹2 lakh for his brother-in-law Gurpreet Singh’s wedding. When he asked for the money back after the wedding, the accused refused to return the amount. Furthermore, the dispute escalated, and Joginder was allegedly assaulted. These incidents were detailed in the suicide note.
**Drastic step taken due to harassment**
Family members stated that Joginder had become mentally distressed due to constant harassment and financial pressure. Ultimately, he ended his life by jumping into the canal.
Based on the statement of the deceased’s father and the suicide note, the police have registered a case against both accused individuals. Raids are being conducted at suspected hideouts to arrest the accused.
Meanwhile, the police handed over the body to the relatives after the post-mortem examination at the Civil Hospital, Fatehgarh Sahib. The investigating officer stated that all aspects of the case are being thoroughly investigated and further legal action will be taken based on the evidence.
