On the final day of his visit to Punjab, BJP leader Nitin Navin met with the renowned agricultural economist and Padma Vibhushan awardee, Dr. Sardara Singh Johl. They discussed critical issues regarding agricultural policy, the economic condition of farmers, and Punjab’s economy. During the meeting, Navin also presented Dr. Johl with details of the Central Government’s work and achievements over the past 12 years.
The discussion covered Punjab’s economic situation, challenges in the agricultural sector, and future prospects in detail. Expressing concern over the state’s financial health, Dr. Johl noted that Punjab is currently burdened with a debt of approximately ₹4.5 lakh crore.
He warned that if effective measures are not taken to control this mounting debt and attract new investment to the state, economic challenges could become even more severe in the future.
**Concern expressed over groundwater**
Dr. Johl also highlighted the serious issue of the continuous expansion of paddy cultivation in Punjab and the declining groundwater levels. He stated that transforming the state’s agricultural structure has become the need of the hour; if the crop cycle is not altered, the water crisis could deepen in the future. He suggested that the central and state governments should collaborate to formulate a concrete policy encouraging farmers to adopt alternative crops. He emphasized that groundwater conservation must be a top priority in Punjab. Schemes must be implemented to make the agricultural sector sustainable—ensuring the conservation of natural resources without adversely affecting farmers’ incomes.
**Dr. Johl’s suggestions to reach the PM**
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Nitin Navin stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party is reaching out to various sections of society through its outreach campaign, informing people about the Central Government’s schemes and achievements. He noted that Dr. Johl possesses extensive experience in the fields of agriculture and the rural economy, making his suggestions highly valuable.
The BJP leader affirmed that the suggestions offered by Dr. Johl would be conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and that the government would give them serious consideration. He expressed confidence that the experience and suggestions of experts associated with the agricultural sector would help make the country’s policies more effective.
