An encounter took place between the police and an associate of a gangster while investigating a recent incident where shots were fired at a textile merchant’s home in Batala. The accused was injured after being shot in the leg during the police’s retaliatory action. He has been taken to Batala Civil Hospital for treatment under tight security.
According to the police, unidentified assailants had opened fire a few days ago, targeting the home of a textile merchant in Batala; however, the shots hit a neighbor’s house instead.
Given the seriousness of the matter, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior officers was constituted. During the investigation, the police arrested an accused named Baldev Singh, whose involvement in the incident came to light.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that he had hidden the pistol used in the incident near a canal in Manes village (near Udhanwal village). When the police took him to the site to recover the weapon, the accused suddenly opened fire on the police party. The police retaliated in self-defense, and a bullet struck the accused in the leg. The injured accused was subdued and admitted to the Civil Hospital for treatment.
