Lok Sabha MP Manish Tiwari has raised questions regarding a 50 percent reduction in the number of voters on the electoral roll during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-2026 in Chandigarh. He has written to Chandigarh’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Prerna Puri, seeking a complete record of the names removed from the voter list.
Tiwari has demanded transparency in the SIR process. The MP noted that there were a total of 6,59,805 voters in Chandigarh during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, data revealed during the SIR-2026 meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on August 14 indicates a drop of more than 50 percent in the voter count. He termed this a serious matter and insisted that full information regarding it be made public. Tiwari has asked the CEO for a list of all voters whose names were removed from the electoral roll during the pre-SIR and current SIR processes.
He has requested details including the voter’s name, ward number, booth number, and the specific reason for the removal of the name. The MP stated that this would clarify the reasons behind the removal of names and demonstrate how the prescribed rules were followed during the process. **Record of 1.38 lakh notices also sought**
In his letter, Tiwari pointed out that 1,38,070 notices have been issued under the SIR process. He demanded a separate list of all voters who received these notices, requesting the inclusion of details such as the voter’s name, ward and booth numbers, the date the notice was issued, and the reason for the notice.
Additionally, he sought information on the responses received so far, the actions taken based on those responses, and the status of cases where further action is pending. Tiwari has requested the CEO to provide this complete information promptly.
He emphasized the need for transparency when such a large number of voters are removed from the list, ensuring that no eligible voter is excluded from the electoral roll due to an error.
