Protest against 10-lane road; sit-in scheduled for September 7 at Shaheed Maidan
The ‘Basti Bachao Sangharsh Samiti’ (Save the Settlement Struggle Committee) has announced plans to intensify its agitation against the proposed construction of the 10-lane road. On Wednesday, the committee held a street-corner meeting at Jagannathpur Chowk. Local residents voiced their opposition, expressing concerns about the impact the road construction would have on settlements, schools, and historical sites. The meeting was presided over by Dilip Kumar, a senior member of the committee. Committee convener Mintu Paswan stated that the construction of the 10-lane road would adversely affect Jagannathpur’s historic Rath Yatra and fair. There are also concerns that an ancient Devi temple—established in 1691—and a Durga temple, which is around 50 years old, could be impacted by the project.

The committee demanded that the government scrap the 10-lane road plan, suggesting that a flyover could be adopted as an alternative to address traffic needs. Attendees at the meeting included Ward 37 Councilor Parmeshwar Singh, along with Radha Purti, Harendra Singh, Vimla Devi, Sushma Devi, Rudan Devi, Jeetan Munda, Mohan Barla, Shyam Thapa, and Dheeraj Ram. The committee has decided to stage a protest at Shaheed Maidan on September 7.
