Slapping a truck driver during a checkpoint operation in the Jalandhar Cantonment area has cost a traffic policeman dearly. Taking cognizance of the matter, the Commissionerate Police has immediately transferred the concerned policeman to the Police Lines. Departmental disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated against him. ACP (Traffic) Ajay Singh termed the policeman’s conduct as inappropriate and unacceptable.
ACP (Traffic) Ajay Singh stated on Friday that the Commissionerate Police’s traffic team had set up a checkpoint near the Cantonment area to inspect passing vehicles. During the operation, the police team stopped a truck and began checking its documents. While the documents were being verified, the truck driver was showing his driving license to the traffic policeman via his mobile phone. At that moment, the driver attempted to retrieve his phone from the policeman, leading to an argument between the two. The dispute escalated quickly, and in a fit of anger, the traffic policeman slapped the truck driver.
**Action taken against the policeman for misconduct**
Senior officials took a serious view of the incident once it came to light. ACP (Traffic) Ajay Singh emphasized that police personnel are expected to maintain restraint, courtesy, and professional conduct while dealing with the public during duty. Under no circumstances is a police officer permitted to take the law into their own hands or behave rudely with a citizen.
He stated that such behavior by the policeman was inappropriate and unacceptable; consequently, the concerned officer has been immediately transferred to the Police Lines. **Departmental action initiated**
According to police officials, departmental disciplinary proceedings are being initiated against the policeman in accordance with established rules. The entire sequence of events and the policeman’s conduct will be examined during the inquiry, and further action will be determined based on the findings.
The Commissionerate Police has made it clear that any form of mistreatment or inappropriate behavior towards the public will not be tolerated at any level. Police personnel have been instructed to work in a restrained manner while remaining within the ambit of the law during duty. Departmental action will be taken against personnel who violate these rules.
