With the ward reservation scenario for the municipal elections now clear, the real political maneuvering regarding ticket distribution has begun. The reservation of 16 out of 35 wards has left many incumbent councilors without a constituency to contest from, while the 19 unreserved (general) wards have seen a surge in ticket aspirants.
The BJP, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party now face the major challenge of selecting ‘winnable’ candidates from among the active leaders within their respective organizations. Factionalism is also expected to play a significant role in ticket distribution, with both Congress and BJP poised to deny tickets to some of their sitting councilors.
For the BJP, the challenge lies in maintaining its status as the dominant party. It faces the task of striking a balance between incumbent councilors, veteran organizational office-bearers, and new, influential faces. The party is already emphasizing surveys to assess the winning potential of prospective candidates; consequently, neither seniority nor organizational recommendations will guarantee a ticket. Priority will be given to leaders who possess a strong personal hold over their ward, maintain direct contact with voters, and demonstrate a high probability of winning the election.
