The district court has convicted serial killer Monu Kumar for the rape and murder of a 60-year-old woman. The verdict regarding his sentencing will be announced on Tuesday.
This marks the third murder case against Monu in which the court has found him guilty. He has already been sentenced to life imprisonment in the previous two cases. The prosecution may seek the death penalty in this instance.
Monu Kumar raped and murdered the 60-year-old woman in 2024. Police investigations linked him to this crime as well. Following his arrest, he confessed to killing three women. During the court proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence against him, leading to his conviction. Once the sentence is pronounced, a crucial stage of the judicial process for this case will be concluded.
**Case Cracked Following MBA Student’s Murder**
Monu Kumar first came under scrutiny in connection with the 2010 rape and murder of a 21-year-old MBA student in Sector 38. The student’s body was discovered near Sector 38. After the killer remained unidentified for nearly 14 years, the police filed an ‘untraced’ report with the district court, though the investigation was not completely closed.
Last year, police grew suspicious of Monu Kumar, a resident of Shahpur Colony near Daddumajra. His DNA sample was collected and compared with the preserved DNA of the deceased student; the samples matched. Subsequently, the police arrested him and filed a charge sheet. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in that case last year.
**Murder of Auto-Rickshaw Driver’s Wife in 2022**
Following his arrest, Monu also confessed to murdering the 40-year-old wife of an auto-rickshaw driver from Maloya in 2022. On the night of January 11, 2022, the woman went to the market but did not return home. Her body was found a short distance away the following day. Following a police investigation into the matter, action was taken against Monu, and the court sentenced him to life imprisonment and a fine of one lakh rupees.
