Tensions flared at a prominent private university in Banur, Patiala (Punjab), around midnight on September 25 after a video claiming the presence of a ‘ghost’ on campus went viral on social media.
Following the video’s circulation, hundreds of students took to the streets late at night, staging a violent protest and vandalizing university property.
The protesting students claimed that a female student had allegedly committed suicide on campus in the past and that her spirit was now haunting the hostel residents.
However, security personnel and senior university officials arrived at the scene and tried to assure the students that no such suicide incident had ever occurred on the premises.
**Officials attribute incident to mischief-makers**
Officials clarified that certain mischievous elements were deliberately knocking on doors and running away. Despite this, the students refused to calm down and continued to shout slogans against the university management. As the situation escalated, large police contingents from the Banur, Sadar Rajpura, and City Rajpura police stations rushed to the spot. A clash broke out between the students and the police force when the latter attempted to restrain the agitated crowd and bring the situation under control.
**Students allege outpost in-charge was intoxicated**
Amidst the commotion, students scuffled with and assaulted Ajay Kumar, the in-charge of the KSM police outpost (City Rajpura). The students alleged that the officer had reported for duty while under the influence of alcohol. Subsequently, he underwent an immediate medical examination at a university laboratory.
Ultimately, the police and university administration jointly assured the students that a fair investigation would be conducted. Officials stated that the entire incident involving the knocking on doors at night and the spreading of rumors would be thoroughly investigated using CCTV footage, and strict legal and administrative action would be taken against any miscreants found guilty.
Following this assurance, the students calmed down and returned to their respective hostels. The situation is currently fully under control.
