Kashmiri saffron and walnuts reaching overseas via the postal network—not just letters and parcels; a major boost for small businesses.

Date:

Post offices, once known primarily as hubs for awaiting letters and parcels, are transforming into new centers for citizen services and international trade in a changing India. Products from Jammu and Kashmir—such as walnuts, saffron, carpets, Pashmina, and traditional handicrafts—are now accessing global markets through the postal network. Sagar Hanuman Singh, Chief Postmaster General of the Jammu & Kashmir Circle, shared this information on Friday while highlighting the evolving role of the Department of Posts and its new services.

Singh explained that the ‘Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra’ (Post Office Export Centre) plays a pivotal role in connecting local products to international markets.

Through this facility, exporters, artisans, craftspeople, and small business owners gain access to services such as the preparation of export-related documents, Postal Bills of Export, customs clearance, packaging, booking, and parcel tracking. This streamlines the process of delivering local products to global customers.
Singh noted that the Department of Posts is evolving beyond its traditional role of mail delivery to become a vital hub for citizen services. Post offices now offer facilities such as Aadhaar enrollment and updates, Postal Life Insurance, and modern digital services.
Operated in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, ‘Post Office Passport Seva Kendras’ are helping provide passport-related services to the people of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh closer to their homes.

Furthermore, there is a strong emphasis on enhancing operational efficiency and customer convenience through digital technology, modern postal software, computerized operations, ‘track-and-trace’ facilities, and self-booking kiosks at major post offices. Reaching remote areas and promoting letter writing
The postal network—extending to remote and border areas such as Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi, Rajouri, Gurez, Machil, and places near Tangdhar like Teetwal, Keran, and Zanskar—plays a vital role in connecting people and delivering essential services.

The department is highlighting its services and contributions during National Postal Week, which is being observed from October 9 to 15 to mark World Post Day.

Submit entries for the ‘Dhai Akhar’ competition by October 31
To keep the tradition of handwritten letters alive, the Department of Posts also organizes the annual ‘Dhai Akhar’ letter-writing competition. The deadline for submitting entries this year is October 31, 2026.

Singh stated that India Post is committed to connecting every citizen through its extensive reach and delivering essential services with efficiency, reliability, and sensitivity.
