Loharu Canal water failing to reach fields since January; Bhiwani farmers warn of a major *panchayat*

Date:

Farmers have been grappling with irrigation issues for a long time due to a water shortage in the Loharu Canal.

There is resentment among the farmers because adequate water has not reached their fields since January, and the issue remains unresolved despite repeated complaints. On Monday, farmers from various villages, including Kushalpura, visited the Irrigation Department office under the banner of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) and raised the matter with the SDO and JE. During the *panchayat* (meeting), which lasted about an hour, the farmers demanded a permanent solution to the water crisis.

Presided over jointly by BKU District President Mewa Singh Arya and Block President Ravindra Kaswa, the meeting highlighted how irrigation is being hampered by the water shortage in the Loharu Canal.

Farmers have been complaining about this issue for a long time but have yet to receive any relief. They demanded that adequate water be supplied to their fields by addressing obstacles, including the theft of water upstream in the canal.

**Assurance given to ensure water reaches the canal tail**
During the meeting, Irrigation Department SDO Jogendra Singh assured the farmers that immediate steps would be taken to remove all hurdles affecting the water supply, including upstream water theft.

He stated that, in addition to supplying water to the farmers’ fields, water would also be delivered to the tail end of the canal this time. Furthermore, an assurance was given to provide the farmers with an additional two and a half days of water supply.

Warning of a major *panchayat* if the issue is not resolved
BKU office-bearers made it clear that if the farmers do not receive relief soon in accordance with the assurances, a major *panchayat* will be convened at the Loharu Irrigation Department office.

They emphasized that it is the department’s responsibility to provide water for irrigation. They stated that the government and the administration would be held accountable if this long-standing issue is not resolved. Farmers from various villages attended the panchayat, including BKU Block Vice-President Sumer Singh Gothra, District Vice-President Indraj, Ramsingh Shekhawat, Narendra Fartiya, Dharmpal, State Secretary Azad Bhungla, Sher Singh Jhanjhra, Prem Dudi, Anand, and Ramprasad Punia.
