Concern Raised at ‘Grain Bank’ Event: 90% of Girls Drop Out Due to Harassers

Date:

Varanasi. The ‘Grain Bank’ was established in Kashi on October 13, 2015, to provide food grains to the elderly, widows, divorcees, and destitute families living on the streets. Its guiding principle is “No one should sleep hungry.”

It is the women of the beneficiary families who collect the grain. To date, the Grain Bank has supplied grain to 2,609 families. It has been working ceaselessly for 12 years to alleviate the suffering caused by hunger. On the occasion of its 12th anniversary, a program under the Uttar Pradesh government’s ‘Mission Shakti’ initiative was organized at Subhash Bhavan, Lamhi.
Akanksha Mishra, the ‘Mission Shakti’ in-charge for the Lalpur police station area, raised awareness among women by distributing ‘Mission Shakti’ booklets. She advised that if any woman or girl is harassed or stalked, she should immediately call 1090, and the ‘Mission Shakti’ team would respond promptly.
The identity of any girl wishing to remain anonymous would be kept confidential. It is crucial for school-going girls to remain vigilant. ‘Mission Shakti’ is dedicated to women’s safety; we are always committed to protecting our daughters. Harassers and stalkers will not be spared.

Dr. Rajiv Shriguruji, National President of the Vishal Bharat Sansthan, stated that ‘Mission Shakti’ has emerged as a source of confidence for daughters. Since the launch of ‘Mission Shakti’, there has been a decline in school dropouts among girls. He suggested that a list of loafers and harassers roaming the streets should be compiled, noting that the presence of police security in such areas has transformed the atmosphere.

The problem of eve-teasing is prevalent in Muslim neighborhoods, yet women there often do not speak up. Their silence, born of the fear of social stigma, emboldens the harassers. Mission Shakti has raised awareness among women, and it is yielding positive results. Akanksha Mishra, the in-charge of Mission Shakti, distributed grain to 55 new female account holders through the grain bank.
