Uttarakhand Elections 2027: The Challenge of 3,000 Booths on the Path to a ‘Hat-trick’ – BJP’s Master Plan Ready

Date:

The road to electoral victory runs through the polling booth. The BJP leadership has imparted this mantra for success to its party workers; however, the results of the 2022 Uttarakhand Assembly elections served as a reminder that merely securing a lead at individual booths does not guarantee an overall win.

In several assembly constituencies, party candidates faced defeat despite leading in a higher number of booths. To address this weakness ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, the BJP has identified approximately 3,000 ‘weak’ booths out of a total of 12,543 polling stations. A master plan has been devised, encompassing everything from increasing organizational activity at these locations to strengthening the party’s reach among the electorate.

In fact, a booth-wise review conducted by the BJP following the 2022 elections revealed data that offered several key insights. In Haridwar Rural, the BJP stood first in 87 booths but ranked second in 61. In Almora, the party led in 85 booths yet lost the election by a margin of just 127 votes. In Haldwani, despite leading in 105 booths, the candidate was defeated by 7,814 votes. In Bhagwanpur, the party secured the top position in only ten booths, while falling to third place in 130 others. Similarly, in Yamunotri, the BJP stood first in only 12 booths and third in 128.

In Badrinath, Pithoragarh, Pratapnagar, and Dharchula, too, there was a significant number of booths where the party finished in second place. The data clearly indicates that in many areas, the BJP faces the challenge of enhancing its acceptability and reach among voters. The party’s strategy for 2027 appears aimed at addressing this very challenge. ‘Vistarak’ (party organizers/field workers) have been deployed across all 70 assembly constituencies in the state. Their responsibilities include ensuring the active functioning of booth-level committees, gathering feedback on local political conditions, and assigning specific duties to booth presidents and party workers at weaker booths. There is also a strong emphasis on reaching out to beneficiaries of government schemes, as well as young and female voters. In this election, the BJP is operating on three fronts: aiming to secure the top position in booths where it previously finished second, and staging a comeback in booths where it finished third.

Simultaneously, the party aims to consolidate its lead in booths where it already holds the top position. To this end, 3,000 ‘weaker’ booths have been identified. The organization has devised a strategy to address the shortcomings at these locations, paving the way for electoral victory.
