Let us tell you that on August 9 last year, a case of rape of a female trainee doctor came to light in the seminar hall of the hospital. The woman was brutally raped and then murdered. The case went to the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das in the local Sealdah court, on which the verdict will be pronounced after 59 days.

According to the post-mortem report, there were more than 14 injury marks on the body of the deceased doctor. According to the post-mortem report, injury marks have been found on the head, cheeks, lips, nose, right jaw, chin, neck, left hand, left shoulder, left knee, ankle and private part of the deceased.

On August 9, a trainee doctor was raped and murdered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The body of the doctor was found in a semi-naked condition.

On August 10, Kolkata Police detained the hospital’s civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as a suspect in the case. During this time, protests also started across the state.

After this, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was seen in action mode in the case and she publicly gave an ultimatum to the police saying that the case should be solved in 7 days, otherwise it will be handed over to the CBI. Meanwhile, the principal of the medical college, Sandeep Ghosh, resigned from his post.

Protests started across the country against the case. After this, the Calcutta High Court took suo motu cognizance of the case and called it a very horrific incident. The court said that if the doctors themselves are not safe, then how will they save someone else’s life. The court then handed over the case to the CBI.

A 25-member CBI team was formed in the case and many people were also arrested. During this time, Mamata also announced to take out a protest rally.

On August 14, many medical students and doctors protested across the state.

On August 14, at midnight, the mob vandalised the hospital. After this, the IMA announced to shut down everything except emergency services across the country on August 17.

Meanwhile, the CBI questioned Sandeep Ghosh for several hours and also conducted a polygraph test on him after the court’s permission.

After this, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and expressed concern over the safety of doctors. A bench headed by the then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court DY Chandrachud prepared a national protocol for the safety of doctors and constituted a 10-member task force. The court also asked the state government and Kolkata Police to give a status report.

After this, a lie detector test was conducted on the main accused Sanjay Roy and six others.

The CBI then raided Sandeep Ghosh’s house and arrested him on September 2 in the financial irregularities case.

After this, the CBI arrested Sandeep Ghosh and a Kolkata Police officer Abhijit Mandal for delay in filing an FIR in the case and destruction of evidence.

On 7 October, the CBI filed a chargesheet against Sanjay Roy.
The trial in the case began in Sealdah Court on 11 October.
Due to the delay in filing the chargesheet, the prime accused Sanjay and other accused Abhijit Mandal and others got bail.
