Chandigarh City is lagging behind in the parameters of cleanliness and hygiene. The Municipal Corporation is making big claims of trying to keep it clean, but it is not even getting the same number as the previous cleanliness ranking. However, some people believe that many people do not keep their surroundings clean, so it would not be completely right to hold the administration responsible.
Garbage is being thrown openly on the roads in various sectors of Chandigarh. After a day, the Municipal Corporation vehicle reaches to pick it up, but by then this garbage is spread all over the road. In some sectors, people are spreading garbage on the road even after warning. These include some big and some small shopkeepers. In this situation, it will be difficult for Chandigarh to get the first place in the cleanliness ranking of 2025.
Safai Mitra Award was received in 2023
Chandigarh got 11th rank in the country in the Swachh Survey in 2023. There was also an improvement of one position compared to last year. This National Sanitation and Cleanliness Program was organized by the Ministry of Home and Urban Affairs (MOHUA) in New Delhi. Chandigarh also received the Best Safai Mitra Safe City award along with this rank.
725 marks were received in garbage free city
In 2022, Chandigarh got 12th rank in Swachhta Survey. This year a total of 4477 urban local bodies (LBS) of the country participated in the Swachh Survey. In this, Chandigarh got good marks in three parts, but got very less 725 marks in the garbage-free city part. 4645.3 marks were received in the Service Level Progress part and full 1125 marks in the Open Defecation Free section. Apart from this, 2045.8 marks were received in the Citizen Voice part.
Corporation’s vehicle is picking up garbage door-to-door
The Municipal Corporation had set up a vehicle for door-to-door garbage collection since last year. This vehicle goes to every sector of the city and collects garbage. The garbage collected here is being dumped in the recycling plant, but due to the carelessness of people, the garbage problem is not being solved.
Vendors are also spreading garbage
There are heaps of garbage on the sides of some famous roads and highways of the city. Apart from this, the hawkers standing in front of Elante Mall, which is called the heart of Chandigarh, are also spreading garbage. The corporation needs to crack down on all this. Action will also have to be taken against those who throw garbage in the open.
This challenge will be in front of the new mayor
This time the post of Chandigarh Mayor has been reserved for a woman. Municipal elections can be held next month. The main challenge in front of the new mayor will also be to keep Chandigarh clean and tidy. It will be interesting to see what rules the new mayor will implement for the cleanliness of the city.
