Chandigarh Mayor Election 2025: If Punjab Congress has its way, AAP will not have a mayor in Chandigarh. Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa has told the party high command in this regard that how the ruling Aam Aadmi Party has prevented Congress from becoming the mayor in Amritsar and Phagwara.
Bajwa was in Delhi on Wednesday. Congress has appointed him as the senior observer of seven legislative constituencies in the Delhi Assembly elections. Bajwa said, ‘We have put forward our point. The party has to take the decision further.’
Let us tell you that despite having 41 councillors in Amritsar, Congress could not make its mayor in the 92-member House. The same situation is in Phagwara. 3 Congress councillors have broken away and joined the Aam Aadmi Party.
Congress leaders allege that the Aam Aadmi Party adopted every kind of tactic to break the councillors. Police force was also used. However, in Amritsar, the government could not break even a single councillor of Congress, but in the rest of the municipal corporation, Congress councillors also broke away.
AAP has 13 councillors in Chandigarh
Mayoral elections are to be held in Chandigarh on Thursday. Last time, Aam Aadmi Party was able to make its mayor in Chandigarh only due to the support of six councillors of Congress. AAP has 13 councillors in Chandigarh. The problem of Punjab Congress is that whenever it accuses Aam Aadmi Party of bullying, it is questioned that they have an alliance in Chandigarh.
Not only this, Punjab Congress is also eyeing the assembly elections to be held in 2027. Congress can join AAP with BJP as much as it wants, but the question arises that why alliance with AAP in Chandigarh? This is the reason why Congress does not want any compromise in Chandigarh under any circumstances.
Bajwa said, we are fighting separately in Delhi. We do not want Congress to have an agreement with AAP in Chandigarh. We have put our point in front of the senior leaders of the party. Now the decision is awaited.
Controversy over Amritsar mayor election
On the other hand, the High Court has rejected the petition of Congress leader Vikas Soni to cancel the mayor election of Amritsar Municipal Corporation. The court said that this petition is not maintainable and the election petition can be filed before the Election Tribunal.
Congress leader Vikas Soni had alleged that his party had won a majority by winning 40 seats, despite this the ruling party selected the mayor without holding any election. Congress councilors also protested, but there was no hearing. Congress is preparing to go to the Supreme Court against this decision.
