There is an election for the post of Mayor in Chandigarh today. Last time, due to the support of six councilors of Congress, Aam Aadmi Party was successful in making its own mayor in Chandigarh. If Punjab Congress has its way, AAP will not have a mayor in Chandigarh.
Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa has told the party high command in this regard that how the ruling Aam Aadmi Party has prevented Congress from becoming the mayor in Amritsar and Phagwara. Bajwa was in Delhi on Wednesday. Congress has appointed him as the senior observer of seven assembly constituencies in the Delhi Assembly elections.
Who will be the mayor of Chandigarh?
Chandigarh will get a new mayor by noon today. Will AAP’s Premlata take over the chair or will disgruntled BJP’s Harpreet Kaur Bakla be given a chance, this will be in front of everyone by 12 noon. AAP is contesting for the post of Mayor while Congress is contesting for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor vote math.
The election will be held in the presence of Justice Jayshree Thakur of Punjab and Haryana High Court, who has been appointed as the independent observer in the election by the Supreme Court. The court has given instructions to get the entire election videographed. Also, the security arrangements will be tight. Nominated councillor Dr. Ramnik Singh Bedi has been appointed as the presiding officer.
He will conduct the elections, count the votes and declare the mayor. The election will be held using ballot papers as before. Mayor Kuldeep Kumar has been granted anticipatory bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He will cast his vote in the mayoral election.
AAP accused of breaking councillors
Bajwa said, “We have put forth our point. The party has to take the decision.” Despite having 41 councillors in Amritsar, Congress could not make its mayor in the 92-member House. The same situation prevails in Phagwara. 3 Congress councillors have broken away and joined the Aam Aadmi Party. Congress leaders allege that the Aam Aadmi Party used all kinds of tactics to break the councillors.
Police force was also used. Although the government could not break even a single Congress councillor in Amritsar, Congress councillors also broke away in the rest of the municipal corporations. The biggest problem faced by the Congress is that there is an alliance between Congress and AAP in Chandigarh.
AAP has 13 councillors in Chandigarh
Let us tell you that the election for the post of Mayor is to be held here today i.e. on Thursday. Last time, Aam Aadmi Party was able to make its Mayor in Chandigarh only due to the support of six councillors of Congress. AAP has 13 councillors in Chandigarh. The problem of Punjab Congress is that whenever it accuses Aam Aadmi Party of tyranny, it is questioned that they have an alliance in Chandigarh. This is the reason why Punjab Congress does not want to be in alliance with AAP under any circumstances.
During the Lok Sabha elections also, Punjab Congress had opposed the alliance with AAP under INDIA. Both the parties had an alliance in Chandigarh. Congress can join AAP with BJP as much as it wants, but the question arises that why an alliance with AAP in Chandigarh? This is the reason why Congress does not want an alliance in Chandigarh under any circumstances.
Bajwa said, we are fighting separately in Delhi. We do not want Congress to have an alliance with AAP in Chandigarh. We have put our point in front of the senior leaders of the party. Now the decision is awaited.
There will be no alliance with AAP, even if I have to leave politics: Vading
