Preparations have started to increase property tax in Chandigarh. The Municipal Corporation has sent a proposal to the administration to increase the tax on residential and commercial properties from 3% to 12%. However, this proposal was canceled due to the opposition of the councilors in the meeting of the Corporation House held on February 17, but now the corporation administration has decided to take it forward. Now the final decision has to be taken by the administration as to how much the tax will be increased.
Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria has already talked about increasing the property tax many times. In such a situation, it is believed that the administration can approve this proposal. Officials say that if the property tax increases, the Municipal Corporation will get additional income of 50 to 60 crores.
The proposal moved forward despite opposition
The councilors opposed this proposal in the House meeting, after which it was canceled. But Corporation Commissioner Amit Kumar objected to this and said that he does not agree with this decision and it is necessary in view of the financial condition of the Municipal Corporation. Now the corporation has sent the entire proposal including the commissioner’s objection to the administration.
The administration had earlier also implemented the cancelled proposals
The increase in water and sewerage cess was opposed earlier, but the administration implemented it using its powers.
The agenda to make parking free was passed in the House, but the administration rejected it and implemented new rates, which are now effective.
