Former Shiromani Akali Dal president and former deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the case of attack on him at the Golden Temple. A petition was filed on his behalf in the court. It said that the accused in the case has come out of jail.
He has demanded that the investigation of this case be handed over to the NIA or CBI. The petition has been filed through advocates Arshdeep Singh Kaler and Arshdeep Singh Cheema. At the same time, senior advocate RS Cheema will represent Sukhbir Singh Badal. The case will be heard today.
Shot on December 2
Former Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal was shot at during service at Darbar Sahib on December 2. This attack was carried out by Narayan Singh Chaura, who has been associated with pro-Khalistan activities. The incident took place when Sukhbir Badal was serving after the punishment imposed by Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Suddenly Chaura fired at him, causing chaos there.
The security personnel took immediate action and caught Chaura and handed him over to the police. Investigation revealed that Chaura was against the Badal family for a long time and has been accusing them of betraying the Sikh sect. Intelligence agencies had earlier also warned that he could target the Badal family. He came out of jail on bail about ten days ago.
Investigation over, no concrete reason to keep him in jail
While granting bail to Chaura, the Amritsar court said that the investigation in this case is almost complete and there is no concrete reason to keep the accused in jail for a long time. After which he has been granted bail. However, it is not clear what conditions have been kept for release on bail.
Know who is Narayan Singh Chaura
Narayan Singh Chaura has been active in Punjab since the era of terrorism. In 1984, he went to Pakistan, where he contacted anti-India organizations and wrote literature on guerrilla war. He was also involved in smuggling of arms and explosives and his role in many terrorist activities in Punjab came to light.
Cases are registered against him under UAPA in Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Ropar. In 2013, he was arrested from Tarn Taran, from where RDX and weapons were recovered. His name also came up in the Burail jail break case of 2004, in which Beant Singh’s killers escaped. Chaura is accused of helping these terrorists in planning their escape from the jail.
Chowra was against the Badal family for a long time. In 2013, intelligence agencies had issued an alert that he could target Prakash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Badal. He had formed the Khalistan Liberation Army and was active among Khalistani supporters under the name Randhir Singh. Police investigation also revealed his links with Babbar Khalsa International. When Sukhbir Badal accepted the punishment given by Akal Takht and started serving, Chaura attacked him.
