The Florence Nightingale Award is given every year to the nursing staff who serve and care for patients. This time again, names of 5 nurses from Chandigarh have been sent for this honor. This biggest honor of the nursing profession in the country was started by the Government of India in the year 1973. So far, Chandigarh has received it 7 times.
This time, names of nursing staff from all three major government hospitals – PGI, GMCH and GMSH – have been sent to the Center. Two names have been sent from PGI, two from GMCH, and one from GMSH. Now the names to be honored will be announced by the Ministry of Health.
Nursing staff: The most important base of the hospital
The nursing staff who spend more time with patients than doctors are called the backbone of the medical system. To honor their dedicated service, this award is given every year on the occasion of International Nurses Day.
Chandigarh GMSH-16 has received the honor 5 times
Kailash Aryan in 2014
Jaswinder Bakshi in 2016
Ravindra Gill in 2018
Shobhana Pathania in 2019
Harinder Kaur in 2021
PGI got the honor once
PGI Chandigarh, which is counted among the prestigious medical institutions of the country, has received this award only once so far. Amrita Edwin was the only nursing staff of PGI who received this award. She has now retired from service.
GMCH got the first award in 2020
Ajay, a nursing officer of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32), received this honor in the year 2020. This was the first time in the history of this hospital that a nursing officer has received this prestigious award.
Now everyone’s eyes are on this year’s selection result. If Chandigarh gets this award this time too, it will be another proud moment for the medical institutions of the city and the nursing service here.
