The Election Commission of India has taken two important decisions regarding the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections. Its direct impact will be seen in the corporation elections to be held in Chandigarh next year. Now voters will be able to safely deposit their mobile phones in the system made near the polling stations. Along with this, strict restrictions have also been imposed on election campaigning around the polling station.
The Election Commission has admitted that mobile phones have become common from urban to rural areas, but carrying mobile phones to polling stations is prohibited. Due to this, senior citizens, women and disabled voters faced problems during voting. Now this facility will be given so that voters can deposit mobile phones outside the center, so that they do not have to wander here and there.
100 meter ban on campaigning
The Commission has also changed the rules related to election campaigning. Now no candidate will be able to campaign within 100 meters of the polling station. Apart from this, the identity slip distribution booths set up by the candidates will also have to be set up at least 100 meters from the polling station.
The Election Commission says that these changes have been made to increase the convenience of voters and to ensure the arrangements and security of polling stations. All these guidelines will be applicable under the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961.
Senior Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Jasbir Singh Bunty said that during voting, people had to face a lot of difficulties in keeping mobile phones. But this step taken by the commission will benefit the people.
