Thousands of patients have got great relief after the OT (Operation Theatre) timings were increased in Chandigarh PGI. Earlier, there was a waiting period of 2 to 6 months for planned surgeries, but now hundreds of patients are getting the opportunity to operate before the scheduled date. In the last 3 months, more than 21 thousand surgeries have been done in PGI.
PGI has increased the OT timings since April. Now elective surgeries are being done from 8 am to 8 pm. This has made it possible to perform two to three additional surgeries daily in every department. The senior professor of OTMC said that this change was necessary for a long time, so that patients can get timely treatment.
Resident doctors also get a chance to do surgery
With the increase in OT timings, not only the patients are getting benefited, but the resident doctors studying in PGI are also getting more opportunities. According to the senior professor, now resident doctors are able to assist senior surgeons for a longer time, which is also improving their training.
There was an increase of 151 in major surgeries in April as compared to March, which shows that even patients with serious cases are now getting treatment quickly.
These departments benefited the most
The biggest benefit of this change has been to the patients of Plastic Surgery, Gynaecology and Orthopedics departments. Earlier, the OT of these departments used to end by 2-3 pm, due to which only limited surgeries could be done. Now after the new orders, the departments are able to perform operations till 8 pm. On an average, 450 to 500 small and big elective and emergency surgeries are being done every day in PGI. The total number of surgeries has crossed 21 thousand in 3 months from April to June.
