Newly married woman from Punjab commits suicide in Maldives: Went on work permit 6 months ago, had a love marriage last year; family said- husband forced her


Gurpreet Kaur (24), a resident of Banur in Mohali, Punjab, has committed suicide in Maldives. She had gone to Maldives on a work permit 6 months ago. Her body has reached India and after the postmortem, she has also been cremated.

The girl’s family has told that Gurpreet had a love marriage with Sagar Arora, a resident of Ferozepur Zira, last year. After this, she started having some disputes with her husband. Meanwhile, she went to Maldives. The family alleges that Gurpreet was forced by her husband to take this step.

At the same time, the police say that the documents of action have been sent by the Maldives Police. On the basis of them, the postmortem of the body has been done. At the same time, further action will be taken on the basis of the statement of the relatives of the deceased, the postmortem report and the investigation of the Maldives Police.

Love marriage took place in April 2024

The deceased’s father Sukhdev Singh has told the police that his daughter had studied till B.Com Honors. She was married in April last year. A few days after the marriage, there was a tussle between the husband and wife. The boy was explained many times, but he still used to fight.

He has said that Gurpreet was trying to go out of the country for a job. She got this opportunity and she went to Maldives on a work permit about 6 months ago. Her friend already lived there. Her husband Sagar had stayed here.

Talked to daughter on 11th June, the same day the incident happened

Sukhdev Singh says that on 11th June, his daughter called from Maldives. She was telling that she was very upset because of Sagar. He does not talk. After talking for a long time, Gurpreet hung up. Shortly after this, Gurpreet’s friend called and said that she had committed suicide.

The deceased’s father says that Sagar had instigated his daughter to commit suicide. Strict action should be taken against him.

Police said- the girl has committed suicide

Meanwhile, SHO Vikramjit Singh of Banur police station has said that the Maldives police had sent the dead body after taking action. According to him, the girl has committed suicide. Her friend who lived with her has also told that Gurpreet has also committed suicide. Gurpreet’s dead body reached Mohali on Friday. Here on Saturday, her postmortem was done and the last rites were performed.

The SHO said that the family members of the deceased have made allegations, but they have not given any complaint in writing. If they give a complaint, then investigation will be done on other angles. At present, action has been taken by registering a case of death under suspicious circumstances.
