The effect of summer is clearly visible in Chandigarh’s famous Sukhna Lake. Due to continuous strong sunlight and hot winds, the water of the lake is drying up rapidly. Now the water level of the lake has decreased to 1156.35 feet, which was 1157 feet on May 15. That is, about one foot of water has decreased.
An administration official said that it is very hot at this time, due to which the water is evaporating rapidly. The parts of the lake which used to be full of water earlier, have now started drying up. Especially on the regulator side, the surface of the lake has started appearing. There is still enough water in the lake for boating. There is no need to panic.
Water level has fallen earlier also
This is not happening for the first time. This often happens in summer. In 2016, the water level had reached 1153 feet and in 2015 it had gone below 1152 feet. Whereas the correct (ideal) water level of the lake is considered to be 1163 feet. This is the right time to clean the lake and do the de-silting work as many parts have dried up.
The administration has made a 5-year plan to save Sukhna Lake. For this, a wetland authority has also been formed, which is headed by the Chandigarh Administrator. In this plan, works like cleaning, water quality and prevention of illegal construction will be done around the lake.
