In the case of robbery of Rs 1.01 crore from Bathinda businessman Sanjay Goyal, a district court in Chandigarh has framed charges against 4 policemen including former Additional SHO of Sector-39 police station Naveen Phogat. The other accused include constables Varinder, Shiv Kumar and Varinder Singh Gill. All have been charged under sections 365, 386, 420, 506, 120-B, 389 and 364A of the IPC.
The case dates back to August 4, 2023, when businessman Sanjay Goyal had come to Sector-40 market to exchange money worth Rs 1.01 crore. Then 3 people, one of whom was in police uniform, forcibly took him and his driver to the police post. According to the complainant, the accused snatched the money by threatening to implicate him in a false case.
Goyal told the police that a senior officer had also reached the spot in a Mercedes car, but he did not get off the car and left the spot. Goyal reached home and told the entire incident to the family and then the matter was brought to the notice of SSP Kanwardeep Kaur.
On the instructions of SSP, DSP identified the accused
On the instructions of SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, the then SP Charanjit called Sanjay Goyal to the police station, where he identified the accused Naveen Phogat. Sanjay claims that Phogat tried to resolve the matter by taking him outside the police station, but when he did not agree, Phogat fled from the spot.
At night, Sector-39 police station registered a case against SI Naveen Phogat, three unidentified policemen and Sarvesh Kaushal, Gill and Jitendra associated with an immigration company. The role of some other police officers is also under investigation in the case.
Phogat has been trapped earlier too
It is worth mentioning that the accused SI Naveen Phogat has already been accused of raping a model during his deployment in the cyber cell of Chandigarh Police. He was dismissed in this case. However, after being acquitted by the court, he was recently reinstated and given the responsibility of Additional SHO in Sector-39 police station.
