ASI’s Son Shot in Jalandhar While Heading to Gurdwara, Injured in Leg; Attack Linked to Threats Against Police Father

Date:

Jalandhar, Punjab —
A shocking incident of violence unfolded in Jalandhar’s Adampur region where the son of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police was shot in broad daylight. The victim, identified as Harmanpreet Singh, sustained a bullet injury in his leg and is currently admitted to the hospital in critical condition.

Incident Took Place in Village Daroli Kalan

The firing took place in the village of Daroli Kalan, Adampur area, late Thursday evening. Harmanpreet was reportedly on his way to a nearby Gurdwara to offer prayers around 6:00 PM when he was attacked. According to the initial police investigation, the firing appears to have stemmed from a personal dispute, but police sources are also probing threats directed at his father, a serving police officer.

Harmanpreet is the son of Sukhwinder Singh, who serves as an ASI with Punjab Police and is currently posted at Adampur Airport. The local police have confirmed the incident and an FIR has been registered at Adampur police station.

Attackers Named in Complaint

In the FIR, the main accused has been identified as Davinder Singh, who allegedly arrived on a motorcycle along with two accomplices. The trio surrounded Harmanpreet and allegedly began abusing and threatening him, mentioning that they would kill his father as well.

As per Harmanpreet’s statement to the police, Davinder warned him of dire consequences, stating, “I will shoot your father too,” before physically assaulting him. When Harmanpreet tried to flee the spot to save himself, a shot was fired, hitting him in the left leg.

Locals Rushed to Help, Accused Fled

Following the firing, residents nearby rushed to the scene after hearing Harmanpreet’s cries for help and the sound of the gunshot. The accused reportedly fled the spot immediately after the attack. Harmanpreet was then quickly taken to the Adampur Civil Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

Doctors have stated that while the bullet did not hit any vital organ, the injury is serious and will require extended medical care.

Police Launch Search Operation

Adampur Police under ASI Satanam Singh responded quickly and have initiated a search operation to arrest the suspects. Police officials said that the accused are currently absconding, but assured that they would be arrested soon and presented in court for police remand.

Investigation on Multiple Angles

While the preliminary investigation suggests that the firing was a result of a personal enmity, police are also looking into the possibility of retaliation against ASI Sukhwinder Singh, as his name was explicitly mentioned by the attackers during the assault.

A senior police official, on condition of anonymity, said, “It is a serious matter when threats are issued to a police officer via harm inflicted on their family members. We are treating the case with the utmost urgency.”

Community in Shock

The village and local community are in deep shock following the incident. Villagers have condemned the attack and demanded immediate action against the culprits. “It’s frightening that even the family of police officers are not safe,” said a local resident.

What’s Next

  • Medical examination reports are awaited to confirm the bullet trajectory and caliber.

  • Police are checking CCTV footage from nearby streets and shops for clues.

  • Mobile surveillance and call records of the accused are also being traced.

  • Harmanpreet’s detailed statement will be recorded once his condition stabilizes.
