Patran (Punjab): A tragic road accident in Hamzheri Bypass, near the town of Patran in Punjab, has left a couple dead on the spot and their two young daughters injured. The accident involved a Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation (PRTC) bus and a motorcycle on which the family was traveling.
The horrific collision occurred during the daytime when the motorcycle reportedly came under the front of the speeding bus. The impact was so intense that the husband and wife died instantly, and the two girls were thrown to the side of the road. Eyewitnesses described the scene as heart-wrenching, with the bodies of the couple lying on the road and the children crying for help.
Deceased Identified, Children in Hospital
The deceased have been identified as a local couple, residents of a nearby village, who were reportedly heading toward town for routine work. They were accompanied by their two daughters — one aged around 10, the other just 4 years old.
As per emergency responders and hospital authorities, the elder daughter, Amanpreet Kaur, sustained serious injuries but is out of danger after initial treatment. The younger daughter, Prinsia, suffered minor injuries and was discharged after first aid.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, while a medical team continues to monitor the elder girl. The entire community around Patran has been left in shock over this sudden loss of life, especially since the family was known to many locals.
How the Accident Happened
According to the initial police investigation, the motorcycle was trying to cross the highway from a service lane when the PRTC bus, coming at a high speed, failed to brake in time. Locals allege that the bus driver might have been overspeeding, though authorities are awaiting CCTV and eyewitness confirmation.
Police officials from the Patran Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. A case has been registered against the bus driver, who has been taken into custody for questioning. Blood alcohol tests and mechanical inspections of the bus will be conducted as part of the routine protocol.
Road Safety and Recurring Accidents
The Hamzheri Bypass, where the crash took place, is a notorious black spot for accidents. Locals have long been demanding the installation of speed breakers, better signage, and more traffic police presence in the area.
According to one eyewitness, “There are no clear indicators or zebra crossings on this stretch. Vehicles drive at full speed. It’s a death trap for two-wheelers.”
This accident has once again raised serious concerns about the lack of road safety measures in small towns and bypass areas in Punjab. Despite repeated warnings and community protests, authorities have not upgraded safety features on the bypass.
Public Reaction and Demand for Justice
Locals and relatives of the deceased gathered at the site of the accident and later assembled at the local hospital, demanding strict action against the bus driver and improved safety infrastructure. Emotional scenes were witnessed as relatives broke down upon seeing the orphaned children.
A local panchayat leader, speaking to reporters, said, “We demand financial compensation for the children and immediate action against reckless driving. If nothing is done, we will launch a protest.”
Meanwhile, the District Administration has assured a thorough probe and also promised to provide relief support to the victims’ family, especially the two daughters now left without parents.
CM Mann Government’s Road Safety Push?
This tragic incident comes at a time when the Punjab Government under CM Bhagwant Mann has been pushing for smart road safety measures and increased awareness about traffic discipline. However, implementation on ground — especially in Tier-2 and rural areas — remains patchy.
Transport and traffic departments are now under pressure to act, with locals demanding that the Hamzheri Bypass be declared a high-risk zone and necessary measures like speed cameras, rumble strips, and pedestrian lanes be installed urgently.
