Jalandhar: Northern Railway has taken a big initiative and planned to convert the DMU car shed in Jalandhar into an integrated coaching depot, which is estimated to cost around Rs 200 crore. After getting approval from the Railway Headquarters, its process has also been started at the divisional level. This step is being considered an important initiative towards making the maintenance and operation of the railways more robust and integrated.
It is worth mentioning that till now the DMU car shed had the responsibility of operating and repairing only Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) and Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains. It is now being expanded. After the expansion of the shed, the maintenance of coaches of trains like Shatabdi, Rajdhani, Vande Bharat will also be done here. Along with this, inspection, cleaning, repair and other necessary technical works of the coaches of mail/express trains will also be done here. Modern equipment and necessary resources will be arranged in this integrated coaching depot to ensure timely and efficient maintenance.
This will improve the quality of rail services and provide better facilities to passengers. According to sources, the transformation process will be completed in a phased manner. This also includes upgradation of existing infrastructure and retraining of employees. It is worth mentioning that in the entire Northern Railway, only Jalandhar city has a DEMU car maintenance shed. Apart from this, there are small sheds in Budgam and Shakur Basti of Jammu and Kashmir where maintenance of DEMU and EMU is done. Now, there will be a lot of benefits from the construction of an integrated car shed in Jalandhar. Here it is worth mentioning that the way the railway infrastructure is being renovated by the Central Government and new trains like Vande Bharat are being built, in such a situation, the railway will emerge stronger by the construction of a highly integrated shed in Jalandhar.
