The dream of getting permanent residence (PR) in Canada can now become easier for the youth and professionals of Punjab. Especially in Punjab, a large number of people want to settle abroad, among which Canada is the most preferred country.
In such a situation, the new decision of the Canadian government can give them both relief and hope. The government of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Joseph Carney is preparing to add three new categories to the Express Entry system, which will directly benefit professionals like senior managers, researchers, scientists and skilled military personnel. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has sought public feedback on these proposed categories and the plan is likely to be implemented from 2026.

Leadership category: Promoting digital transformation, productivity and competition by attracting senior managers.
Research and innovation: Strengthening the economy with innovation and scientific development by giving priority to researchers and scientists.
Skilled Military Personnel: Adding military professionals with special skills and security expertise to Canada’s diverse and strong workforce.
Express Entry is Canada’s main immigration management system that determines which foreign nationals are eligible to apply for PR. IRCC believes these new categories will enhance Canada’s economic prosperity, global competitiveness and innovation capability. The public consultation window is open until September 3, 2025, after which the Government of Canada will decide when and how to implement the new categories.
