As soon as the new Municipal Commissioner Sandeep Rishi took charge, there was a ruckus in the Municipal premises. While the Municipal Administration was welcoming the Commissioner with new hopes, the Union leaders blew the trumpet of displeasure. Within a short time of the Commissioner taking charge, the Municipal Union has warned of a strike by staging a strong protest. Hundreds of employees came out shouting slogans under the leadership of Union President Bantu Sabharwal. They alleged that the Municipal Administration has arbitrarily made outsourced employee Kishan Lal permanent, while hundreds of employees have been waiting for a permanent job for years.
The Union leaders said that the employee who has been made permanent is not actually a gardener. He is a driver and does not even know about plants or gardening. Despite this, he was made permanent. The Union says that this decision is biased against other employees, which will not be tolerated under any circumstances. During the protest, the employees raised slogans against both the government and the Municipal Administration. The situation got so heated that the union leaders warned that if a solution is not found soon, they will stop the entire work of the corporation. Dozens of employees including Driver and Technical Union chief Shammi Luther, Rimpi Kalyan, Rajan Kalyan, Baba Raj Kishore, Mandeep Singh, Gaurav, Benny and Hatesh Nahar participated in the protest.
This dispute that arose before the new commissioner on the very first day remained a topic of discussion throughout the day. If the union goes on strike on its warning, the city residents may have to face huge problems in the coming days.
The future of hundreds of employees is at stake: Union
The union leaders said that at present about 59 gardeners, 64 fitters, 50 drivers and 20 JCB machine operators are working on outsourcing in the corporation. While placing the demand, they said that the employees should be made permanent under a uniform rule. If one can get the benefit, why not everyone else? The union delegation met Mayor Vaneet Dhir. The mayor asked for some time to find a solution to the problem. But the employees said bluntly that if no concrete action is taken soon, an indefinite strike will be started from Tuesday. Union chief Bantu Sabharwal said that he will not wait any longer. All outsourced employees should be made permanent immediately and appointment letters should be given to them. If their demands are not met, they will stop every single work of the Municipal Corporation.
