Shocking news has emerged for Punjabis living abroad. Following the United States, the Portuguese government has also taken a tough stance against migrants and has begun preparations to deport over 400,000 migrants from the country. These include approximately 14,000 Indian workers. Thousands of young people from Punjab have been living in Portugal and paying taxes to the government for the past 5-6 years.
The newly formed Portuguese government has adopted anti-migrant policies and issued orders to detain migrants. Migrants from various countries protested this decision. The protesters stated that they have been living in Portugal legally, paying taxes, and enjoying government medical facilities. Despite this, the government wants to forcibly expel them from the country, which is unfair. Police reportedly arrested and jailed several migrants, including 10-12 Indians.
Under the old Immigration Laws 88 and 89, any foreigner could legally stay in Portugal if they obtained a permit and followed the rules. However, the new rules are being implemented to try to expel even legal immigrants.
