Immediately after news broke this morning that Baljit Singh, the first mayor of Punjab, resigned from his post, the party high command took significant action and suspended him from the Aam Aadmi Party. The party’s state general secretary, Harcharan Singh, issued a letter ordering his immediate suspension.
Sources say he resigned after his name surfaced in a corruption case in Moga. He is accused of accepting money from a woman in exchange for saving her from a drug trafficking case. The woman was couriering sweets to her husband in Canada, which contained 450 grams of opium. Sources subsequently allege that the mayor accepted the money to protect her from the case. When the police arrested the woman, photos went viral of her claiming the mayor had accepted the money from her. After this, today the Mayor has been expelled from the party along with taking his resignation, but the reasons for this have not been officially confirmed yet.
