Baba Gurwinder Singh—hailing from Sangrur and popularly known as ‘Kheri Wale Baba’—is once again making headlines. This time, the reason is not his second marriage, but rather his entry into politics. He has joined the ‘Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De),’ the party led by Amritpal Singh, the Member of Parliament from Khadoor Sahib; this move has ignited a debate within both political and social circles. While joining the party, Baba Gurwinder Singh stated that he arrived at this decision after deep contemplation. According to him, he asked himself who truly deserved the votes of Punjab’s youth, and he found the answer in Amritpal Singh. Supporters present at the event responded to this statement with enthusiastic sloganeering. Kheri Wale Baba also announced that he would actively campaign in support of the candidates fielded by the party in the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections. During the event, he went so far as to declare—offering to put it in writing on a stamp paper—that Amritpal Singh would become the next Chief Minister of Punjab.
However, questions regarding this political move have also begun to surface on social media. Many observers are pointing out a contradiction: while the party advocates for a campaign against drug abuse, Baba Gurwinder Singh has previously made public statements in support of intoxicants. In a recent interview, he himself admitted to consuming opium, a revelation that has further deepened the controversy. Baba Gurwinder has been a subject of public discussion in the past as well, owing to his personal life and various statements. Now, the commencement of his political innings has sparked an entirely new debate.
