What has happened in the farmers’ movement so far?
On February 13 last year, farmers started their agitation for 13 demands including MSP of crops. Because at that time Lok Sabha elections were to be held. In such a situation, the central government showed readiness in the beginning. Along with this, senior leaders including the then Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda were sent to Chandigarh.
Along with this, a meeting was held with farmer leaders in Sector-26. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann was also present in these meetings. This meeting continued till 2 o’clock in the night, but when the farmers were not heard, they decided to go to Delhi.
But the Haryana government stopped the farmers at the border by putting up barricades. Also argued that the farmers have modified their tractors. If the farmers come forward, the atmosphere of the state will deteriorate. During this, young farmer Shubhkaran Singh died in a clash between the police and farmers at Khanauri border. However, when the farmers stopped there, the connection of Punjab Haryana was cut off from both those routes. Due to this, the businessmen started incurring losses.
The matter reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. On 10 July, the High Court ordered the Haryana government to open the barricades, then the government went to the Supreme Court. After that the Supreme Court constituted a high power committee in this matter. Then from 26 November, farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal started a hunger strike. Also decided not to take any kind of medical facility.
But as soon as the struggle completed 50 days, the central government officials reached Khanauri border. They invited the farmers for a meeting. After this, Dallewal decided to continue the hunger strike and take medical facility. Also, on 26 January, a tractor march was taken out across the country.
