During the festive season, cybercriminals are employing new tactics to target individuals. Unsolicited links sent to mobile phones—purportedly for Diwali greetings, gifts, or gift hampers—can lead to cyber fraud. The Mohali Police has issued an awareness message on social media, urging the public to remain cautious of such links.
DSP Varinder Singh Khosa explained that during the festive season, links promising attractive greetings, gifts, or other offers may be sent from unknown numbers. Clicking on these without verification can result in cyber fraud. He cautioned that even a link received from the mobile number of an acquaintance may not be safe; cybercriminals could hack a mobile phone and send such links to the user’s contacts. The DSP advised against clicking on unknown links—whether related to online shopping or claims of receiving gifts or hampers. Always verify the authenticity of a website before proceeding, and do not open any link that appears suspicious. Furthermore, never share your bank account details, ATM information, OTPs, or any other confidential banking data with anyone. Staying vigilant can help you avoid falling victim to cyber fraud during the festive season.
