The case came before the Akali-BJP government
This case came to light in 2007, when there was an Akali-BJP government in the state. Moga’s City Police Station had registered a case of gang rape on the complaint of a girl from a village in Jagraon. After this, the victim girl’s statement was recorded under section 164. After this, the police officers played games in the case. They started including the names of many businessmen and politicians in the case. However, during this time a politician recorded the audio of the police asking for money. This brought the case in the headlines.
When the names of politicians and businessmen started coming up in this case, this case started making headlines in the media, then on 12 November 2007, the Punjab and Haryana High Court took suo motu cognizance of this case. Also, a report of this case was sought from the police. After this, after investigating the whole case, the High Court handed over the case to the CBI. At that time the court had commented that this case seems no less than the Jammu sex scandal.
Rich people were made accused
In this case, with the connivance of the police officers, two women used to trap innocent businessmen and traders. They used to extort huge amounts from them. Later, they used to give them a clean chit in the investigation. When the investigation of the case progressed, some police officers were also arrested by the CBI. However, Akali leader Barjinder Singh Makhan Brar, Akali Dal district president Amarjit Singh Gill were acquitted.
The woman who became a government witness was murdered
In this case, a woman named Manpreet Kaur was made a government witness. However, later the court declared her hostile. Due to this, separate action was started against her in the Mohali court. Apart from this, Ranbir Singh alias Ranu and Karamjit Singh became government witnesses. However, Manjit Kaur, who became a government witness in this case, was living near Zira under a changed name. In the year 2018, she and her husband were shot dead.
