Dr. Kashmir Singh Sohal, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Tarn Taran (Punjab) representing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), passed away on Friday morning. He had been battling cancer for some time and was undergoing treatment. On Thursday evening, his health deteriorated significantly, after which he was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Amritsar. He breathed his last at around 11 AM on Friday.
Dr. Sohal, a medical professional turned politician, was elected MLA for the first time in 2022. His untimely demise has left the political fraternity and medical community in deep mourning. From Ophthalmologist to Politician
Dr. Sohal started his career as an eye specialist and was actively involved in student politics during his college days. In 1986, he received his first posting at a government hospital in Mianwind. He served with dedication during the peak of insurgency in Punjab and later worked at the Civil Hospital in Tarn Taran.
A Voice for Social Causes
Post-retirement in 2013 as a Senior Medical Officer, he continued to be socially active. He went on a hunger strike demanding district status for Tarn Taran and formed a Parents’ Association to protest against arbitrary school fees.
Entry into Politics with AAP
In 2014, Dr. Sohal joined the Aam Aadmi Party. He contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections from Tarn Taran and defeated three-time Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu by a margin of 13,588 votes.
A Family Rooted in Medicine
His wife, Navjot Kaur, is a lecturer in a medical college. His daughter, Dr. Manmeet Kaur, is also a doctor and is married to Dr. Karanbir Singh. His son, Navpreet Singh, has completed his medical education.
