Wednesday is going to be a challenging day for the Chandigarh Police. On one hand, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) will arrive at the Dussehra Ground in Sector 43 to celebrate the fifth anniversary of its protest, while on the other, the Punjab University Bachao Morcha has announced a complete shutdown at the university. Chandigarh Police has made tight security arrangements at both locations. These events are expected to increase crowds, traffic jams, and security challenges in the city.
3,000 Chandigarh Police personnel will be on duty. IG Pushpendra and SSP Kanwardeep Kaur will personally oversee security arrangements. The police have granted farmer organizations permission to hold a peaceful rally at the Dussehra Ground in Sector 43. According to the police, approximately 10,000 protesters from more than 30 farmer organizations across the country are expected to arrive in Chandigarh from Punjab, Haryana, and surrounding states. Chandigarh Police has also made strict security arrangements at the border. Barricades have been erected around the Dussehra ground.
Around 1,500 soldiers will be on duty at this location. Three DSPs and six inspectors have also been assigned to the Dussehra ground. Farmers are not allowed to proceed beyond the Dussehra ground. Farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal stated that the rally aims to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the SKM movement, reiterate pending demands such as legal guarantees for MSP, withdrawal of registered cases, and compensation for the families of farmers martyred during the movement.
