Around 8 PM, near the Shankar Road Gaushala (Cow Shelter), a sensational incident unfolded in which a young man set his own motorcycle on fire—an event that has raised serious questions regarding the conduct of the police force.
According to reports, the youth had visited a dairy shop to purchase milk. During this time, a gunman—stationed there to provide security for a bakery owner—stopped the motorcyclist and threatened to issue him a traffic fine. He claimed that the motorcycle’s silencer was oversized and was emitting sounds resembling firecrackers.
According to the youth, his motorcycle was fitted with the original, factory-installed silencer, and he had not set off any firecrackers; however, the security personnel refused to accept his explanation and threatened to both issue a fine and impound the vehicle. Enraged by this, the youth—acting fearlessly—set his motorcycle ablaze right in the middle of the road. The incident caused chaos among the bystanders present at the scene, and traffic came to a complete standstill. Shockingly, the motorcycle continued to burn for nearly half an hour; yet, neither did the police immediately intervene to bring the situation under control, nor did the fire brigade arrive in a timely manner.
Meanwhile, instead of attempting to extinguish the fire or manage the situation, the concerned security personnel deemed it more important to apprehend the youth and take him to the police station. During this time, bystanders attempted to put out the fire but were unsuccessful. Approximately half an hour later, a fire brigade team arrived at the scene and brought the blaze under control. Following the incident, palpable outrage has been observed among the residents of the area. Palwinder Singh, the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Sadar Police Station, arrived at the scene with his team; they had the burnt motorcycle removed and restored the flow of traffic. Meanwhile, Harwinder Singh, the SHO of the City Police Station, stated that the youth is currently in police custody and is being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation into the matter.
