The electricity situation in the city has deteriorated to such an extent that, over the past few days, the Electricity Department has been continuously imposing very long power cuts. With power remaining unavailable for hours on end, residents are enduring significant hardships in their daily lives. Speaking on the matter, residents—including those living in various colonies—stated that while the summer heat has not yet reached its peak, the department has nonetheless been implementing continuous, prolonged power cuts over the last few days, leaving them without electricity for several hours at a stretch. Even the inverters installed in their homes eventually shut down due to the lack of incoming power, plunging their households into darkness. Consequently, residents are forced to purchase expensive diesel to run their generators. Residents further noted that messages are often circulated on social media warning that a prolonged power cut—lasting for several hours—will be imposed from the evening until the late hours of the night (around 2 or 3 AM). As a result, the city appears to be experiencing a complete blackout at night, with total darkness enveloping the area.
The lack of electricity disrupts children’s sleep patterns; consequently, due to insufficient rest, they face immense difficulties in attending school. Furthermore, perishable items stored in refrigerators spoil, leading to significant financial loss for households. Additionally, residents living in ‘Town Number 4’ reported that their specific locality suffers from an exceptionally high frequency of power outages. They urged the authorities to either reduce the load on this specific feeder or ensure its efficient and proper operation, noting that as the summer intensifies in the coming days, they will otherwise be forced to confront this recurring problem.
Residents have appealed to officials of the Electricity Department to prioritize the resolution of these issues—specifically in ‘Town Number 4’ and other affected areas—before the onset of peak summer, thereby ensuring that residents do not have to face any further inconvenience. Many residents have taken to their social media pages to express their outrage against the government and the Electricity Department staff. They warned that if a consistent and adequate power supply is not restored to the city residents in the near future, they will unite to stage a protest and lay siege to the local power station.
